# Product / Service Roadmap

### What is it?

A Product/Service Roadmap is the structured plan for how a business's product or service offering will evolve over time. It maps what is being built, developed, or improved, in what sequence, and toward what strategic outcome. It gives teams across the business a shared view of where the offering is headed and why, making it possible to plan marketing, sales, and operational activity in advance rather than reactively.

***Also known as:*** *Product Roadmap, Service Roadmap, Development Pipeline, Product Strategy*

### Why it matters

Without a roadmap, product and service development tends to be reactive: responding to immediate pressures rather than building toward a coherent strategic destination. A roadmap makes direction explicit and shared. Marketing, sales, and customer success teams can plan ahead. Investment decisions can be sequenced deliberately. Stakeholders across the business have a common reference point for what is coming and when. The roadmap also surfaces conflicts early: when what the product team is building does not align with the audience the brand team is targeting, or the channels the distribution plan depends on, those misalignments are easier to identify and resolve before they become costly.

### When it matters most

A Product/Service Roadmap is most important when a business is scaling its offering, when multiple teams need to coordinate around a shared development timeline, or when customer or market feedback is pointing toward significant changes that need to be sequenced carefully. It is equally relevant for digital products, physical goods, and services: the terminology originates in digital product development but the underlying discipline of mapping how an offering evolves over time applies across all product and service types.
