# Product / Service Design & Development

### What is it?

Product/Service Design & Development is the set of decisions a business makes about what it offers to its market: what it builds, creates, sources, or delivers, and how that offering is shaped to create value for a defined audience. It covers all product and service types equally, from physical goods and digital products to professional services and AI-powered offerings.

### Why it matters

The product or service is the primary vehicle through which a business delivers its value proposition. Without a clear connection to Company Strategy, Brand Strategy, and target audience, even a genuinely strong product can fail to find its market. The AoM does not prescribe where a business should start: some begin with a strategy and build a product to serve it, others begin with a product idea and build the strategy around it. What matters is that the relationship between the product or service and the rest of the marketing system is ultimately coherent. A product without a clear audience, a brand that can carry it, and a plan to take it to market is an incomplete commercial proposition regardless of its intrinsic quality.

### When it matters most

Product/Service Design & Development decisions become critical when a business is launching a new offering, when customer or market feedback reveals a gap between what the product delivers and what the audience needs, or when competitive pressure requires the business to evolve what it offers. It is also relevant whenever Brand Strategy changes significantly: a new positioning or target audience may require the product or service to adapt to maintain alignment between what the brand promises and what the business actually delivers.
