# Environmental Scanning

### What is it?

Track the macro forces and external signals that shape the market, including political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental forces, and the risk signals within them.

***Also known as:*** *PESTLE analysis, macro scanning, horizon scanning, risk watch*

### Why it matters

Businesses that scan their environment consistently are less likely to be caught off guard by shifts that were visible in advance. Environmental signals rarely arrive as sudden events. They accumulate as weak signals before they become strong ones. Organisations that read them early have more time to adapt strategy, adjust investment, and avoid decisions built on conditions that no longer hold.

### When it matters most

Environmental Scanning is most critical during periods of market disruption, regulatory change, or economic uncertainty. It is also valuable during strategic planning cycles, when assumptions about the operating environment need to be tested before commitments are made. Businesses entering new markets or geographies should treat it as a prerequisite.
