# Brand Positioning Statement

### What is it?

A Brand Positioning Statement defines how a brand wants to be perceived in the minds of its target audience relative to alternatives. It is an internal strategic tool that captures the essence of the brand's position in a single structured statement, giving teams a consistent reference point for all brand and marketing decisions.

***Also known as:*** *Positioning Statement, Brand Position, Positioning Framework*

### Why it matters

A Brand Positioning Statement makes the brand's intended position explicit and shared. Without it, different teams interpret the brand's position differently, producing messaging and creative work that pulls in different directions. The statement does not need to be communicated externally: its job is to align internal decision-making so that everything the brand produces reflects a consistent and deliberate position. When positioning is clear, decisions about what to say, where to show up, and how to present the brand become significantly easier to make and easier to defend.

### When it matters most

Brand Positioning Statement becomes critical when a business is launching or repositioning a brand, when competitive pressure is eroding differentiation, or when the brand has grown in complexity and different teams are pulling in different directions. It is also the right moment to revisit when the target audience, competitive set, or value proposition has changed significantly enough that the existing position no longer reflects the brand's reality or ambition.
