# Verbal Identity

### What is it?

Verbal Identity is the defined way a brand uses language: its tone of voice, writing style, vocabulary, and the specific words and phrases that are characteristic of how it communicates. It is the linguistic equivalent of visual identity, giving the brand a consistent and recognisable way of expressing itself in words across every touchpoint and every system that generates content on its behalf.

***Also known as:*** *Tone of Voice, Brand Voice, Copy Style, Brand Language*

### Why it matters

A brand is as recognisable through its language as through its visual identity. When Verbal Identity is well defined, the brand sounds the same whether a person or a system is doing the writing, across a social post, a customer response, a product description, or an automated communication. When it is absent, every writer and every AI tool defaults to their own interpretation, producing output that is inconsistent in register, vocabulary, and personality. For AI-generated content this is not a theoretical risk: it is the default outcome. Verbal Identity provides the specific parameters that determine whether AI output sounds like the brand or simply sounds like everything else.

### When it matters most

Verbal Identity is most critical when a business is building or rebuilding its brand, when content is being produced across multiple teams or channels simultaneously, or when AI tools are being introduced into the content production process. It is also worth revisiting when the brand's audience, positioning, or personality has shifted and the existing voice no longer reflects who the brand is or who it is speaking to.
