# Physical & Spatial Design

### What is it?

Physical & Spatial Design is the application of brand strategy and identity to physical environments and spaces: retail stores, offices, event spaces, packaging, signage, and any other tangible expression of the brand in the physical world. It ensures the brand is expressed consistently and intentionally wherever customers or employees encounter it in person.

***Also known as:*** *Environmental Design, Retail Design, Brand Environment, Spatial Branding, Experiential Design*

### Why it matters

Physical spaces are among the most immersive brand experiences available. A well-designed physical environment communicates brand values, personality, and quality before a word is spoken. When Physical & Spatial Design is aligned with the rest of the brand system, it reinforces recognition and trust at every in-person touchpoint. It also serves as a reference point for any system involved in designing or specifying physical brand environments: the clearer and more structured the physical design standards, the more reliably they can be interpreted, applied, and maintained across locations, suppliers, and production partners.

### When it matters most

Physical & Spatial Design becomes most important when a business is opening or redesigning physical locations, launching a product that requires packaging design, or preparing for significant events or brand activations. It is also worth addressing when the physical expression of the brand has drifted from the broader brand system, or when a rebrand requires the physical environment to be updated to reflect the new direction.
